Hillius & Evans

PHOTOS BY RICK SPENCER PHOTOGRAPHY

DATE: 8.4.12

NAMES: Bailey Hillius & Brett Evans

THEY LIVE IN: Yakima

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Family home

Bailey and Brett knew almost the instant they met that they were meant for each other. Although the two didn’t date in high school, they always kept in touch. “Then one day we ran into each other at the gas station,” said the bride. “I knew that day that that was it.” Family is important to the Evans, and played a key role in their big day. Their wedding and ceremony was held at the groom’s family home — a home he helped to build — and most of the food was provided by family as well. Going with a country theme, tuxes “were not allowed,” and the bride wore old-fashioned boots. Even the couple’s horses were involved, when they rode them off into the sunset after the reception. Said the bride, “I got to get all dressed up like a fairy princess and still wear my chaps and spurs that day. What more can a girl want?”

Bailey's ring is a family heirloom from her grandma Doreen.

OCCUPATIONS She’s a “farmer engineer” on the couple’s ranch, where she takes care of the animals; he works in his family’s business, Evans & Son Inc Earth Moving  THEY MET in junior high school  HE PROPOSED by putting a ring on their new puppy’s collar  TRADITIONAL OR UNUSUAL “A combination, I think”  NUMBER OF GUESTS 120  ATTENDANTS WERE the best man, who is the bride’s brother and had just gotten out of the Marine Corp., and the bride’s cousin, who was her maid of honor  COLORS were yellow, red and blue  THEME was “cowboys and angels, totally country”  ON THE MENU was country-style lunchtime fare for the 11:30 a.m. ceremony: sandwiches, potato, pasta and fruit salads, “flaming wedding bbq beans,” spinach dip and assorted cookies and dessert bars. Michele Jacobs has great advice for couples planning their wedding: do it a little bit at a time, and far in advance. “I was doing centerpiece stuff back in October. ‘Mock’ weddings showcase talents

The "mock" couple poses for a kiss.

By SCOTT KLEPACH

PHOTOS BY J.M. HUNTER PHOTOGRAPHY

We all know how involved weddings can be — a huge number of details has to be coordinated so everything goes smoothly. But some go through all this work, even when there’s no one tying the knot.

Photographers like Jessica M. Hunter throw stylized “mock weddings” to gather vendors and highlight their work. In May, Hunter and the team she assembled held just such an event with the theme, “Enchanted Forest.” The photo shoot was held at Suncadia Resort just outside Cle Elum.

Shirley's Cakes supplied the mini cupcakes.

“It showcases the photographer’s work along with all the other vendors’ work,” says Hunter, who started J.M. Hunter Photography just over six months ago. Hunter realized she hadn’t shot wedding photos, so she planned on creating a mock wedding to highlight her work right before wedding season kicked off in May.

While Hunter has seen mock weddings online, she says she’s never seen one close to home. And she knew she couldn’t do it alone, so she contacted Sarah Nelson, wedding planner and owner of Couture Events, to help her plan and execute the event. The two met in March to get all the vendors on board.

“It kind of turned out to be a huge thing, a lot bigger than I ever expected,” Hunter says. But she’s not stopping here: she’s planning another event at Suncadia during the winter. The “Winter Wonderland” wedding will incorporate snow and horse rides. We can’t wait!

Shirley's Cakes provided the cake.

Where’d you get that wedding cake idea?

By SCOTT KLEPACH

Chances are when you’re in the flurry of planning a wedding, the most pressing concern is probably not the history of the wedding cake. In fact, during the reception you’ll likely be so busy that you won’t have a lot of time to eat much of it either!

But it’s still neat to have a little background on such an important feature of any wedding celebration.

A number of sources, including Smithsonian Magazine, reveal that the history of the wedding cake leads back to Rome. That’s right: We can thank some of our wedding cake traditions to the time of Caesar in the ancient Roman Empire, when the groom celebrated tying the knot by delivering a barley cake — sugar really wasn’t an option then — right onto the bride’s head.

Medieval-era cakes were more like bread — tasty, probably, but not sweet. And there were piles of bread too, a ritual for the bride and groom. The recently wedded couple would kiss over the pile of buns, and if they successfully completed a lasting kiss, chances are their marriage would be fruitful and they would be more likely to have “buns in the oven.”

Moving forward to another empire, many other wedding cake traditions stem from the age of Queen Victoria in 18th-century England.

The wedding cake at the 1858 wedding of Princess Victoria (Queen Victoria’s oldest child) and Prussia's Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia. (Image from Wikipedia.)

At this time, sugar was more abundant and accessible, so cakes arguably tasted better. We owe our concept of the tiered wedding cake to this historical time and place, along with icing, decorations and the “bigger is better” mentality.

Today, you can’t really go wrong with the tradition you choose. (Though you might want to think twice about the Roman tradition of smashing cake on the bride.) In fact, the only real expectation might be for the bride and groom to offer some sort of celebratory dessert, in whatever way, be it a tiered cake or a platter of cupcakes in all colors, sizes and themes. Or, you could favor other pastries, candy bars or other sweet treats, and most likely no one will complain. In fact, your bold idea may inspire its own trend, so dream big, and our taste buds will rejoice!

Clouds began to sprinkle right before Alayna and Christopher’s wedding, which made Alayna pretty nervous. But there was no need to worry, since the sky cleared, and the weather “was perfect.”
The pair met at college, became friends and began dating a couple of years later. Christopher proposed in February 2013 in Leavenworth. “The day didn’t go exactly as he planned, with a sub-par lunch, late start, hot sauce disaster and a freezing girlfriend,” says Alayna, “but he proposed in front of the lit Christmas trees in the town square and it was perfect!”
One of Alayna’s favorite memories is when she walked down a staircase to meet her dad before they proceeded down the aisle together. Her father started crying, which made her cry, too — all the way to the alter.

The Proposal, as told by the couple

Jeff had purchased the engagement ring sometime in July and was waiting for the perfect time to drop down on one knee. He woke up on Nov. 11, 2008, with a lot of love in his heart and knowing that this would be the day. After a late morning workout, the two planned to take a drive through the mountains. Secretly, Jeff had ordered their favorite food from Olive Garden to-go. He covered the food with blankets to hide it, gassed up the car and placed the ring inside the power outlet. They left for the hills and ended up parking along the Little Naches River, where they went for a walk with their dog Panda. When they came back, Jeff handed Amber his phone and asked her to charge it for him. When Amber went to open the flap to plug in the phone the ring popped out. Meanwhile Jeff was already down on one knee waiting to ask the big question. Without any hesitation, Amber immediately said yes. Afterward they enjoyed the surprise dinner  underneath the stars. Since the couple didn’t have phone service to call and tell the good news, they had to wait an hour on the drive home before they could share their excitement.

Special moments…

“We had sponsors, and a veil & cord ceremony – it was really important for my parents and myself to incorporate a combination of a traditional Christian wedding with my Filipino culture. My mom made the veil which made it even more special.”

“The weather however was a bit crummy … During the ceremony, everyone could hear it absolutely pouring outside! But as the ceremony ended, and we walked out of the church hand and hand, the clouds cleared up and it was beautiful and sunny outside for the rest of the day. Timing was perfect and luck was on our side!”

“We had a great game area that overlooked the view of the golf course; it was occupied at all times! It’s a tradition to play a game called washers at family get togethers on Jeff’s side or at camping trips with our friends.”

“My sorority sisters sang a song and passed a ‘loving cup’ filled with champagne, which is a tradition done at my sorority.”

“Before pulling out my garter, Jeff pulled out a rubber chicken and other miscellaneous things that I had no idea about! It was pretty hilarious.”

A confetti send-off

Photos by Michael Fisk, Michael Fisk Photography

Yakima’s Kasey and Joel Clifford met when their career paths crossed: Kasey worked at the Yakima County Clerk’s office and Joel at the Yakima County courthouse. Joel eventually popped the question while the couple popped popcorn. After watching their favorite band, Hand Full of Lovin’, perform at the Sports Center, they went back to a hotel room that they had won at a Yakima Bears game. They “popped popcorn, watched local T.V. and then…. in his finest P.J. pants” Joel asked for Kasey’s hand in marriage. Popcorn also played a part in this fun couple’s carnival themed wedding.

Names: Kasey Berger and Joel Clifford

They live in: Yakima

Ceremony & Reception: Yakima Foursquare Church; Fontaine Estates Winery, Naches

OCCUPATIONS She’s a sixth grade teacher at Union Gap School, and he’s a sergeant with the Yakima County Sheriff’s office. • THEIR WEDDING WAS unusual • NUMBER OF GUESTS 115 • NUMBER OF ATTENDANTS 8 • THEME was vintage carnival • COLORS were warm, autumn colors: brown, merlot, sage, rust and charcoal • ON THE MENU Buttery popcorn popped on site, salted peanuts in the shell and a candy buffet that guests could use to fill take-out boxes. Dinner was pulled pork sandwiches or bratwurst with fiesta corn, green salad and baby red potatoes. • THEY GOTAWAY in a red 1973 Camaro • AFTER THE RECEPTION THEY ate a late dinner at Shari’s, then headed home. • THEY HONEYMOONED at Whistlin’ Jack Lodge then to Maui during the winter. • FAVORITE MOMENT The bride’s father had convinced close friends to play a trick on the couple: While walking his daughter down the aisle he shouted, “Wait! Hang on.” Then he proceeded to collect bundles of cash from various guests, finally giving the cash to the groom at the alter. It was “funny, spontaneous and fits our families’ personalities.”
